Writing "How To..." stories

In writing we are learning that we can write "How to..." stories so we can teach people how to do things. To begin the unit the kids choose four thing they feel like they are experts at. We have been busy planning and writing these stories. We have also been reading "how to" stories and today we decided to mix it up. Today we followed a "Making Butter" story and we made butter.

The kids really enjoyed the process and most enjoyed tasting it at the end. Some of the kids with the more sophisticated palates felt our butter "needed more salt". I certainly got a kick out of hearing them talk about it. Many kids stated they were going to do this at home. So, if you feel like doing something at home while you're snowed in this weekend, all you need is some heavy cream, salt and a jar. Put the salt and cream (we did about a cup) in the jar and shake it.... a lot!! It's super easy and would probably be a great workout for your arms if shoveling is not your thing.
