Phonics to Reading

 Each day we spend about 35-45 minutes doing our Phonics to Reading program. Each week you will see what we practiced by the packets that come home on Friday's in the take home folder. We begin this block of time practicing some of our phonemic awareness skills such as identifying the beginning or ending sound in a word, counting the number of words in a sentence, hearing and creating rhymes, breaking words into syllables, or changing a part of a word to create a new word. 

After this we move to our packets. Each week we focus on a new letter and the sound it makes. Each day we have a few different skills we practice. We practice writing the letter of the week and identifying pictures with the sound of that letter, we'll learn two new words that we'll use to read a book, and we even write a little bit about the story we read. 

There are many components to this part of our day and each time we practice, it becomes smoother and smoother. Here are a few pictures of some of our work from today:
