Reader's Workshop

At this point in kindergarten we are doing a lot of work around storytelling, developing a love for reading, and learning about what it looks like to be a reader. Early in the year we begin "reading" picture books and slowly that progresses to reading our "just right books". (I'll explain more about this later in the year.)

In reader's workshop we have two parts; private reading and partner reading. Private reading is when we are reading books from our baskets by ourselves. Partner reading is when we get to enjoy books with a classmate. Each reader's workshop we practice both types of reading.

(Obviously, I know you're not judging my in the moment drawing skills!)

Today in reader's workshop we began by creating our partner chart. This chart is one we will use often and add to from time to time. We are learning that there are certain things we need to do in order to be successful partners while reading. We are also learning different ways that partner's can share while reading together. Today we learned that reader's can share their "WOW" pages. These are the pages in a book that you can't wait to tell someone about! We used sticky notes to mark our pages during private reading so when we read with our partner we knew exactly what we wanted to talk about.

Here we are doing our private reading first.

The books that we "read" during reader's workshop are books that we are familiar with or books that will spark a lot of interest. The books in our baskets right now are read alouds we have heard this year, butterfly books, and construction books. Both the butterfly books and construction books go with our science learning.
